IN THE ACT
IN THE ACT (2010 - 2012)
curatorial collaboration with Imri Sandström
series of six performance acts in four different cities that brought together a totalt of 44 artists, curators and writers from five different countries
publication documenting the project, can be purchased here
IN THE ACT was an international space for emerging performance, presenting what tends to slide out of our hands, is hard to document, hard to sell and hard to experience unless you are there. Instead of asking what is, IN THE ACT asked when or where is performance art? And then, we proposed, it is in the act. IN THE ACT aimed to create a space entirely devoted to an inevitable reliance on presence, to the processes of exploration and composition that can only take place within the now of performance, and to the ambiguities and diversities that lie embedded in its form(s). IN THE ACT created an international, feminist and interdisciplinary room, where Swedish and international performance artists working within overlapping artistic domains but in different geographical spheres were brought together. From themes and catchwords that they share an interest in, and relate to in their work, they were invited for mutual and collaborative explorations.
During the spring of 2011, IN THE ACT was presented with three evenings and three themes at Högkvarteret in Stockholm, Sweden. In the fall of 2011, IN THE ACT was presented with one evening at Malmö Konsthall, Malmö, Sweden, and with one evening at Silvershed, New York, USA. In the summer of 2012, the sixth and final act took place in Falträsk, Västerbotten Län. During 2012, IN THE ACT was also transformed into a publication extending the dialogues and explorations initiated within the project into printed matter, which was released in December 2012 and can be purchased here.
IN THE ACT was produced with support by The Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Iaspis – The Swedish Arts Grants Committeé’s International Program for Visual Artists, The Culture Committee of Stockholm City, and The Workers Educational Association of Stockholm (ABF).
